First RotariansPaul Harris ,an Attorney and four of his friends met in his house at Chicago,USA,just for fellowship. They met again the same time the week after. This continued for weeks together and more persons joined the fellowship meeting every week at different venues.
Gradually, the group started exploring possibilities of helping the under-privileged in their community using their professional skills. This yearning for bonding and desire to serve their community ,led to the formation and inauguration of the first service club , the Rotary club of Chicago,on 23 rd February 1905, by Paul Harris.
The name “Rotary” was coined due to the practice of rotating meetings among different venues and Vocational Service to the community, was adopted as the main theme. Gradually ,the popularity of this movement spread to other states and even other countries due to the extraordinary passion and untiring efforts of Paul Harris and his friends. By 1921, Rotary clubs had been formed in six continents. Hence the architects of the movement adopted the name “Rotary International ” a year later.
Today Rotary International is a well organised institution comprising of 1.2 million members called Rotarians. The movement is headed by its President, assisted by a governing council of elected Rotary directors and a General Secretary. Geographically the movement is divided into various Rotary Districts transgressing political borders. Each district consists of individual clubs, headed by it’s President, assisted by a board of directors. Each district is also headed by a District Governor. To know more about Rotary visit
